Compelling Identities from Lagom Design

River Market branding
River Market branding
Revitalizing The River Market
The River Market Community Association, a group of business leaders and residents of Kansas City’s original neighborhood, wanted a comprehensive refresh of their branding to better represent their vibrant community. They turned to Lagom Design to rejuvenate their logo and website, capturing the unique essence of this beloved area.
Drawing inspiration from the distinct street grid, set at an angle from the rest of downtown, and the eclectic personality of its residents and businesses, we crafted a brand identity that reflects the dynamic spirit of the River Market. Our design approach celebrated the neighborhood’s rich history while infusing modern elements.
The flexible logo and branding embody the character and charm of the River Market. This comprehensive redesign not only enhances the association’s ability to communicate with its audience but also solidifies the River Market’s standing as a vibrant and essential part of Kansas City. Our work ensures that the refreshed branding will resonate with both longtime residents and newcomers, celebrating the past while looking forward to the future.

Rapid KC branding
Rapid KC branding
The Jewel of the Road
Establishing a transportation company from the ground up is a formidable challenge, one that Rapid KC has embraced with determination. As a multifaceted intermodal logistics company, Rapid KC seamlessly integrates import/export services, fumigation, transloading, and brokerage under one roof. When they approached Lagom Design, their goal was to create a brand identity that clearly communicated their comprehensive and efficient process.
Inspired by their commitment to clarity and client services, we developed a brand that embodies these qualities through a distinctive jewel icon, symbolizing their crystal-clear communications and streamlined operations. The two-tone letterforms, reminiscent of polished chrome, reflect the sleek and modern nature of their services. The result is a cohesive and striking brand identity that Rapid KC proudly stands behind.

Smith & Boucher branding
Smith & Boucher branding
Evolution Over Revolution
Smith & Boucher, an MEP engineering firm, urgently needed a refreshed brand, as their existing assets dated back to the early 2000s. Their logo appeared outdated, and its colors were challenging to reproduce. Lagom Design embarked on an in-depth exploration of the company’s rich 50-year history to find authentic inspiration.
We unearthed a timeless Bauhaus-like ligature from the 1980s and seamlessly paired it with modern typography. Adding a touch of history, we incorporated a quirky ampersand from the company’s earliest documents. The result included a refined color palette featuring slate grey and energetic orange, embodying both sophistication and dynamism.
Collaborating closely with Smith & Boucher’s principals, we developed stationery, graphics, and templates that are not only visually stunning but also easy for their team to implement. The new brand now reflects Smith & Boucher’s storied past while projecting a vibrant, contemporary image.

MIAA Conference branding
MIAA Conference branding
A Unified Identity for a Growing Conference
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), an NCAA Division II conference founded in 1912, has a long and respected history rooted in Missouri and Kansas. When the conference expanded beyond its traditional geographic footprint in 2010, it became clear that the existing logo—an outline of the two states—no longer reflected its membership.
Lagom Design was tapped to develop a new visual identity that could unify all member institutions under a single, timeless symbol. Drawing inspiration from the hexagon—a shape found in beehives and long associated with strength and cooperation—we created a logo that reflects the spirit of community, competition, and shared values among the conference’s schools.
As alumni of MIAA institutions ourselves, we took special pride in contributing to a brand that honors the conference’s history while embracing its future. The result is a modern, meaningful identity designed to leave a lasting impact across generations of athletes and fans.

KC Craft Beer Week branding and website
Uniting a City’s Love of Beer
Kansas City Craft Beer Week 2017 brought together a series of events at dozens of breweries, craft-beer focused bars and restaurants. The committee, made up of volunteers from marketing teams at these businesses, selected Lagom Design to design a brand for the ten-day event.
We created the “beerdie”, a shuttlecock of grain and hops as the symbol of all that is craft beer in the region. Supporting artwork for coasters, tees, and glassware were also produced. We designed and developed a custom website where businesses could securely add their own events, keeping with the theme of community and collaboration.

The result is a revitalized brand identity that not only honors LSW Engineers’ legacy but also positions them for future growth and success.

Wilderness Brewing branding
Wilderness Brewing branding
Blazing a Branded Trail
Wilderness Brewing Company was the first brewery in Kansas City to successfully crowd-source their start-up funding. What happened after their Go Fund Me campaign … that’s another story.
But before that, Wilderness tapped Lagom Design to create a brand for their beers. We worked with their team to create a series of interchangeable logos, each with a strong hand pointing the way toward great beer holding different glassware, to reference their plan to continually change their offering. The logos were supported by patterns, graphics, and and other elements that could be used to build merchandise and other uses.
Like all their other supporters, we are still waiting on Lagom Öl, a Swedish-inspired farmhouse ale, with spruce tips.

When an Event Expands Beyond a Web Page
Naturally, a brewery focused on German-style beer bier should host an Oktoberfest. As the popularity of KC Bier Company’s annual event soared beyond the confines of their Bierhalle and Biergarten, they moved their tents to Crown Center, near downtown Kansas City. And when the needs of the event outgrew a single page on their website, KC Bier turned to Lagom Design to create a custom website for KC Oktoberfest. Now the event draws well over 10,000 people each year.
We integrated the event’s branding – which changes each year – into the custom-built site. Leaning on the secure and flexible WordPress CMS, updates to the schedule, entertainers, and vendors is a snap. The 2023 Missouri Loves Company collaboration series was the first to adhere to a theme, each release was an IPA. Our design helped elevate the event, reinforcing the professionalism of the foundation while celebrating the achievements of the students it serves.

Missouri Craft Brewers Guild packaging

The Love of One State on a Can
When the Covid pandemic kept the Missouri Brewers Guild from holding a beer festival in 2020, they began to brainstorm other ways to earn money for the organization to carry on their work of advocating for independent craft breweries at the state and federal level. What they landed on was a collaboration beer created by 22 of their member breweries with the support of nine corporate sponsors. The beer, a hazy IPA named Missouri Loves Company, was sold in four-packs only from the breweries involved in the collaboration. At most of those establishments, a few social media posts spread among their devoted craft beer drinkers like wildfire, and it sold out the first day.
While most of the label design is in a blue and silver palette, reflecting the grey sky and frozen ponds of a brisk Missouri winter (the beer was released in December), the name of the beer is shown on color blocks that nod both to the colors in the Guild logo and to the hue of the beer itself. These elements – the Guild logo and an image of the beer in a chalice-style glass – are the only ones on the label outside the blue and silver palette.

Bringing Big Equipment to Life
Introducing a new product is always a significant moment. When the product is a powerful new line of tractors, it calls for something truly memorable. An agriculture-focused agency approached Lagom Design to create a printed mailer that would generate excitement and anticipation among farmers ahead of the equipment’s launch.
To make the invitation stand out, we designed a bold, visually engaging piece that included a unique twist: 3D glasses. When used, the glasses brought select images and key messaging to life, creating an immersive experience that reflected the size, power, and innovation of the new equipment.
This mailer not only captured attention but also reinforced the impact of the product itself – delivering an experience that was as dynamic and distinctive as the tractors it promoted. It’s a great example of how thoughtful print design can break through the noise and leave a lasting impression.
